Giorgio Facchini was born in Fano in 1947.
He devoted himself to drawing from a young age and, alongside his studies, attended the goldsmith workshop of an uncle, where he acquired his first technical knowledge and learned cuttlebone casting. His encounter in Fano with Edgardo Mannucci, a sculptor and friend of Burri, who belonged to that circle of Roman artists who renewed Italian art in the second half of the 20th century, was decisive for his artistic formation. He later completed his studies in Venice.
His first sculptural creations were spatial, informal, and kinetic.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1966 at the Galleria Fanesi in Ancona, with a catalogue introduction by Edgardo Mannucci.
He then began exhibiting in Spoleto at the Festival dei Due Mondi, and Maestro Giancarlo Menotti, the founder of the festival, wrote about him: “Gold is malefic, but in the hands of an artist like Facchini it can become fragile and delicate like a melodic phrase.”
In 1969, the fashion designer Pierre Cardin invited him to Paris to an Autumn-Winter fashion show to present his kinetic jewellery, “Jewels in Motion.”
Giorgio Facchini taught Plastic Disciplines and Contemporary Jewellery first at the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata and later at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan.
He has won numerous awards: from the Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice to the Venice Biennale; he won first prize at “Diamanti oggi” by De Beers in Milan; he won first prize at the Gubbio Biennale.
He has exhibited his works in art galleries, jewellery stores, and museums; abroad at Drummonds jewellery store in Melbourne, Australia; at the Wichita Art Association Galleries in Kansas, USA; in New York City; in Germany; in Brussels; at the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires; and in several Italian cities such as Rome, Milan, Venice, Bari, Bologna.
Several Italian museums display his works, and important art critics and historians have written about his work. His name has been mentioned in art and fashion magazines and books.
In the 1990s, he received a prestigious commission from the Italian Government: a sculpture in twenty-one editions intended for the 13th meeting of the seven most influential nations in the world, held in Venice.
His jewellery has been worn by figures such as Rita Levi Montalcini, Liz Taylor, and Oprah Winfrey, and several publications have been produced over the years on his jewellery and sculptural work.
The most recent one, “Giorgio Facchini. La scultura tra astrazione e simbolo.”, was published in 2024 by Silvana Editore.
